Nico's SAXOPHONE Lessons

June 25, 2022

Great work, Nico! For your next lesson, focus on the material in the Link to Key Signature Review and the Bossa Nova/Latin tunes; (I've also already put up loads of stuff in swing style, which we will discuss soon!)

Some Bossa Nova and Latin Jazz Tunes:

For "The Girl From Ipanema," I've provided both the lead sheet and Stan Getz' transcribed tenor solo - the original recording is in Db concert (key of Bb for alto), but it is a longtime tradition to play in in the key of F concert (key of D for alto). Why, you ask? I have no idea!

Focus on the sub-tone embouchure which really hinges on having the inside of your lower lip on the reed (instead of the outside of your lower lip).

Remember the "v" sound and shape of your mouth.

Really LISTEN to the articulations and the style of the recordings - there's so much to gain from putting on your headphones and trying to sound exactly like these players:

Straight, No Chaser in Bb concert (70bpm - alto)

Straight, No Chaser in Bb concert (110 bpm - alto)
