KAREN'S  RECORDER  LESSONS

March 9, 2025
Hi Karen!

It's a pleasure to get started with you on your return to playing music and the start of your journey into the repertoire of the recorder.

A few things to keep in mind:
• If your fingers are troubling you with pain or stiffness, a minuscule change in how your hands address the instrument can have a huge impact.
Today we briefly discussed a few options to keep in mind:
- As your right fingers sit on the tone holes, think about pushing your right fingertips just 1-2mm towards your left
-  while your right thumb is very stable on the back of the instrument, sometimes a grippy texture (wax/double-sided tape/rubber band) may add even more stability and will help with discomfort
- Playing slightly towards your right side will change how your arm/hand/fingers approach the instrument

• As you search for other music, remember that the recorder is also known as the:
blockflöte, flûte à bec, flute, simple flute, and lots of variations of these.
The transverse flute or flûte transversière is the horizontally-held flute.

• This link is to the website of the American Recorder Society which has loads of great info and resources

Please have a look at the music below. Feel free to check out all of it and certainly move forward if there is something that you really dig.

For the next lesson, your assignment is:
•  Telemann Fantasia #1
• choose a few of the Bach duets to play together
